Open Sesame: The How and What of Sesamoiditis

Do you have pain in the ball of your foot? You are most likely a dancer, runner, or athlete, but we at Step By Step Family Foot Care wouldn’t be surprised if you aren’t. Sesamoiditis is a common condition that affects the small bones beneath the big toe joint. These bones, called sesamoid bones, are embedded in the tendon that connects the big toe to the foot. And when they become inflamed or injured, it can lead to significant discomfort.

Sesamoid comes from the word “sesame seed,” and it’s because these bones are so tiny. But with little size can come big problems, so let’s unpack sesamoiditis in detail.

Symptoms of Sesamoiditis

The most common symptom of sesamoiditis is pain in the ball of the foot, particularly under the big toe. This pain can be sharp or dull, and it may worsen with activity, especially walking, running, or jumping. Here are some other symptoms:

  • Swelling in the ball of the foot
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Difficulty walking or running
  • A popping or clicking sensation in the foot

Treatment for Sesamoiditis

Treatment for sesamoiditis typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). It can also include over-the-counter pain relievers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which alleviate pain and inflammation.

Functionally, custom orthotics may help by distributing pressure and reducing stress on the sesamoid bones. In conjunction, physical therapy exercises can help strengthen the foot and improve flexibility.

However, in severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged sesamoid bone.

Preventing Sesamoiditis

To prevent sesamoiditis, it’s important to wear well-fitting shoes with adequate cushioning, gradually increase the intensity of your activities, and avoid sudden increases in strength training. Also, be sure to stretch your feet and calves regularly and see your podiatrist if you notice any signs of discomfort.

By understanding the symptoms and causes of sesamoiditis, you can take the necessary steps to prevent it for you and your family.
